Mash Ups, Parenting Style

I haven't really listened to any deliberate mash ups, but I hear them all the time.

There's a man,
Comin' round,
Taken names,
With our Handy-dandy notebook!

Johnny, meet Blue. Blue, Johnny.

Lou (mail):
Ummmm...that's not funny. Worse still, you prompt me to make a Blue's Clues critical comment.

So the first half dozen episodes I see are "The New Guy", and I think - Damn, this guy is really cheesy and over-the-top, no wonder people don't like him as much.

But then I see a few epiosdes with the much-beloved Steve, and I discover that all of the cheese (the songs, the choreography, etc.) originated with Steve! And he doesn't do it as well...he, shockingly, underplays it. So while the New Guy is very broad, he fits the material better than Steve, and now I miss him since I'm now watching Blue's Clues at least a dozen times a week!

Jacqui dislikes Blues Clues for being formulaic and repetitive. Steve looks like someone I went to college with, which is disturbing. And Blue's a frigging girl. And what's with Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper? How do they have kids who are spices? The biology is all wrong...
