That Sinking Feeling

I got Settlers:Elasund in a math trade! Great. No. Wait. That picture doesn't look like a city. Oops. I traded for the wrong game.

So, how is Candamir? I guess I'll find out.

I once traded for a copy of Razzia, mistakenly thinking it was Razzia!.

At least those have near identical names.

Doh! I haven't played Candamir yet, but I just played Elasund for the first time last night. It's tough to know whether I enjoyed it or not. It's definitely meatier than Settlers, and luck doesn't play as much a part. It's waaaay more cutthroat. I need another play before I decide whether I like it.

Just make sure to use the richer Mayfair tile set. I think the data is up on BGG for what they changed; the situation is unfortunately a bit confusing. If you check the 4-player tiles described in the rulebook vs. the ones you got, if they're different, you need to make an accommodation somehow (I think the rule for the 4-player tiles was easy in that they all have one extra resource, while the 3-player tiles usually have an extra resource, but sometimes have an extra experience).

I enjoyed Candamir once we got the richer tiles, but most people were more lukewarm on it. But with the original tiles, it's long, trading is almost non-existent, and it can be pretty tedious towards the end.

Shame you didn't end up with Elasund. I'd have been interested to hear what you thought.

Personally I can't stand Settlers, but really like Domaine, so another cutthroat Euro from Teuber had me quite excited.

Elasund is back high on my list of games to get, after you managed to convince me that Leo and Pillars might not be the next great games.

I think you got lucky. Elasund has more settlers luck than settlers, but Candamir is reasonably fun. --Jeff

Brian, Candamir is interesting the first couple of plays, but after that it becomes second verse, same as the first. It's a long game with 4 people, but it's not bad as a two player (every so often). Dana and I pull it out every blue moon.

It's funny; the temptation for RPGer's in this game is to really build a kick ass character. Unfortunately, normally by the time they've done that, someone else is about win the game.

I would also like to hear your opinion on Elasund (some day).
